A GFCI outlet stops working most often because it has tripped due to moisture or a fault on the circuit, the reset button needs to be pressed, the outlet itself has reached end of life (10–15 years), the upstream breaker has tripped, or a downstream outlet on the same protected circuit has a fault. Try the reset button first.
Quick troubleshooting
- Press the “reset” button on the GFCI itself
- Press “reset” on other GFCIs on the same side of the home
- Check the breaker at the panel
- Look for moisture or visible damage
- Plug a known-working device into another outlet for comparison
If resets don’t work, schedule diagnosis via our outlets and switches service.
