The most common causes of toilet clogs are flushing too much paper at once, flushing wipes (even “flushable” ones), flushing feminine products, kids’ toys or other foreign objects, weak-flush low-flow toilets from the 1990s, and partially blocked drain lines downstream of the toilet. Prevent them with routine drain maintenance and habit changes.
Prevention
- Use less paper per flush — multiple flushes is fine
- Never flush wipes, even “flushable” ones
- Keep feminine products and trash out of toilets
- Use child locks on lids in homes with young kids
- Schedule preventive drain cleaning for older homes
- Replace pre-1995 weak-flush toilets
For recurring clogs, we can confirm a deeper issue with a camera inspection and clear with hydro jetting. For toilet replacement, see toilet service.
