The most common types of residential air filters are fiberglass (MERV 1–4, cheapest, basic), pleated (MERV 5–13, the sweet spot for most homes), HEPA bypass (MERV 17+, allergy-grade), electrostatic (washable, mid-tier), and electronic / polarized media (active, premium). MERV 8–13 covers most homes’ needs.

Filter types compared

  • Fiberglass (MERV 1–4) — Basic, cheap, protects equipment only
  • Pleated (MERV 8–13) — Best for most homes
  • HEPA bypass (MERV 17+) — Allergy-grade, needs bypass duct
  • Electrostatic — Washable, mid-range capture
  • Electronic / polarized — Premium active capture

Higher MERV isn’t always better — it must match your HVAC’s static pressure capability. We recommend the right filter during AC maintenance, and install upgrades via indoor air quality.
