A pressure-vacuum breaker (PVB) causes a slight pressure drop — usually 2 to 5 PSI — but should not noticeably affect your home’s water pressure under normal conditions. If you notice significantly weak pressure downstream of a PVB, the unit is probably stuck, fouled, or failed and needs repair or replacement.
Signs of PVB pressure issues
- Sudden drop in irrigation or hose-bib pressure
- Continuous dripping from the PVB air vent
- Spraying water from the bonnet
- Slow zones in your irrigation system
- Whistling or hissing during startup
