A sump pump that runs constantly usually has one of these issues — a stuck float switch, undersized pump for the water table, a leaking check valve, a high local water table or recent heavy rain, or a clogged discharge line forcing water back into the pit. Constant running burns out the motor fast, so address it quickly.
Common causes
- Stuck or tangled float switch
- Pump undersized for groundwater conditions
- Failed check valve letting water flow back
- Recent heavy rain or snowmelt raising the water table
- Clogged or kinked discharge line
- Failing pump near end of life
