A sump pump is an automatic water-removal pump installed in a basin (“sump pit”) in the lowest part of a basement or crawlspace. When water collects in the pit, a float switch activates the pump, which pushes the water out through a discharge line and away from the foundation — keeping the lower level dry.
How it works
- Water enters the sump pit from drain tile or groundwater
- Float switch detects rising water level
- Pump activates and pushes water up the discharge pipe
- Check valve prevents backflow into the pit
- Pump shuts off once water level drops
