Smart outlets are generally safe when installed correctly by a licensed electrician, but they do introduce a few considerations — heat from the smart electronics inside the box, the need for a neutral wire, software/firmware updates, and the importance of using only listed (UL, ETL) devices. Cheap unlisted smart outlets can fail or overheat.

Safety considerations

  • Only use UL or ETL listed smart outlets
  • Make sure the box has a neutral wire
  • Verify amp rating matches the connected load
  • Keep firmware updated to patch security issues
  • Pair with surge protection at the panel

We install code-compliant, brand-name smart outlets through our smart outlet service, and add whole-home surge protection for total electronic safety.
