You can do some basic wiring tasks in your home (swapping a light fixture, replacing a switch with a working circuit, adding low-voltage devices), but anything involving new circuits, panel work, gas line proximity, wet locations, or fixed appliance circuits should be done by a licensed electrician. Most jurisdictions also require a permit for substantial wiring work.

DIY vs. pro

  • DIY-friendly — Swapping a fixture or switch on a working circuit
  • Call a pro — New circuits, panel work, GFCI/AFCI requirements
  • Always pro — Wet locations, gas appliances, EV chargers, hot tubs
  • Always pro — Anything requiring a permit
