Yes — circuit breakers can absolutely go bad. Like any mechanical switch, breakers wear out from age, repeated tripping, heat exposure, and physical impact. A failing breaker might trip without a real overload, fail to trip when it should, refuse to reset, or feel warm at the panel.
Signs of a failing breaker
- Breaker trips repeatedly with no real overload
- Won’t reset to full “on” position
- Trips at a load far below its rating
- Feels warm or hot to the touch
- Has visible scorching or melting
- Hums or buzzes
A failing breaker is a safety issue, not just an inconvenience. We replace breakers same day through circuit breaker service, and review the panel for other issues during an electrical inspection.
