To prevent pipes from freezing, insulate any pipes in unheated spaces (crawlspaces, garages, attics, exterior walls), keep your thermostat at 55°F or higher even when away, open cabinet doors under sinks during cold snaps, drip cold water from the faucet farthest from your main, and disconnect/drain outdoor hose connections before the first freeze.
