Electricity is safely run to an outdoor structure through buried conduit or direct-burial cable on a dedicated circuit from the main panel, terminating at a weatherproof disconnect or sub-panel at the structure. All outdoor outlets must be GFCI-protected, weather-resistant, and installed in in-use covers. The work requires a permit in most jurisdictions.
How a code-compliant outdoor run looks
- Dedicated breaker at the main panel
- Properly sized conductors in PVC or rigid metal conduit (or direct-burial UF cable)
- Buried at code depth (typically 12″–24″ depending on method)
- Weatherproof junction or sub-panel at the structure
- GFCI protection on every outdoor receptacle
- Permits pulled and inspected
