A pressure-reducing valve (PRV) typically lasts 7 to 15 years. Quality of water, severity of pressure surges, and installation conditions all affect lifespan. Most PRVs that fail do so gradually — slowly losing their ability to hold pressure down — which is why we recommend a pressure check during every annual plumbing inspection.
PRV lifespan factors
- Typical life: 7–15 years
- Water quality (high mineral content shortens life)
- Pressure-surge frequency
- Installation quality
- Whether expansion tank protects against backflow
We test and replace PRVs through our pressure and backflow service.
