No — water pooling under your water heater is never normal and should be treated as an early warning sign. Even a slow drip usually means the tank, drain valve, T&P relief valve, or supply connection is failing. Left unaddressed, the tank can fail catastrophically and flood your space.
Common causes
- Tank corrosion — pinhole leaks through the steel shell
- Loose drain valve at the base
- Failing T&P relief valve weeping water
- Loose or corroded supply or recirculation connections
- Condensation on the outside of cold tanks (usually benign)
Have it inspected right away. If the tank itself is leaking, replacement is the only fix — see water heater replacement. For valve or connection issues, we handle water heater repair the same day.
