An air handler looks like a tall, rectangular metal cabinet, usually about the size of a small refrigerator. It is most often installed in a closet, garage, basement, or attic and houses the blower motor, evaporator coil, and air filter that move conditioned air through your ducts.
From the outside it looks plain — a painted steel enclosure with one or two access panels, a refrigerant line running in from the outdoor unit, a condensate drain line, and a return-air opening on one side. Inside, it pairs with your heat pump or AC to circulate cooled or heated air. Knowing what to look for makes it easier to spot rust, water staining, or duct disconnections that signal a problem.
