A quality water softener lasts 10 to 15 years on average, with the resin bed lasting roughly 10–12 years and control valves often outlasting the resin. Well-maintained, properly sized systems running on quality salt routinely hit the upper end of that range. Cheaper systems or those exposed to high iron levels can fail in 5–8 years.
What extends softener life
- Annual professional checkup
- High-quality, low-impurity salt
- Sediment pre-filter on dirty water
- Resin sanitization annually
- Pretreatment for high iron or sulfur (well water)
If your softener is over 10 years old and showing signs of wear, replacement is usually cheaper than ongoing repairs. We service and install through water softener service, and complement it with whole-home water filtration.
