Most homes need their electrical outlets replaced every 15 to 25 years, but you should replace any outlet sooner if it shows damage, warmth, scorching, looseness, or no longer holds a plug. Outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors should also be upgraded to GFCI or tamper-resistant models if they are not already.
Signs an outlet needs to be replaced
- Plugs fall out or feel wiggly
- The faceplate is cracked, discolored, or warm to the touch
- You see scorch marks, sparks, or smell burning plastic
- The outlet has only two prongs (no ground) in living areas
- It is in a wet area but is not a GFCI
If you are seeing any of these signs, an outlet replacement is a same-day fix in most homes. Our licensed electricians install outlets, switches, and dimmers to current code, including GFCI outlets for safety in wet areas. Schedule an electrical inspection if you are unsure of your home’s overall wiring health.
