An electrical outlet usually stops working because of a tripped breaker, a tripped GFCI, a loose wire connection inside the outlet, or a worn-out receptacle. About half the time the fix is as simple as resetting a breaker or the small reset button on a nearby GFCI outlet.
Quick checks before you call
- Check the breaker panel for a tripped or half-on breaker
- Press “reset” on every GFCI outlet on that side of the home — one GFCI often protects several outlets downstream
- Try a different lamp or device to rule out a bad cord
- Listen for buzzing or look for scorch marks at the receptacle
If the outlet stays dead after a reset, the issue is internal — a broken contact, burned wire, or backstabbed connection that has worked loose. Our licensed electricians handle electrical repairs, outlet and switch replacement, and GFCI installation across the Spokane area.
