Sump Pumps

A working sump pump is the cheapest insurance against a basement flood.

Most basement floods happen because of three things: a sump pump that failed quietly, a sump pump that didn’t have battery backup during a power outage, or a sump pump that was undersized for the water volume. We fix all three.

We install primary submersible pumps from Zoeller, Liberty, and Wayne; sealed-cover pedestal pumps where the application requires; and battery-backup secondary systems that take over automatically when power fails or the primary pump can’t keep up. Annual service available for Care Club members.

When to Call

Sump pump warning signs

Sump pumps fail quietly. You usually don't know yours is dead until the basement floods. These are the warning signs you can catch first:

  • Loud or unusual noises

Grinding, rattling, or excessive vibration — motor or impeller wearing out.

  • Cycling on and off rapidly

Failed float switch, stuck check valve, or undersized pump for the load.

  • Sump pump over 7–10 years old

Average lifespan. Replacement before failure is much cheaper than after.

  • No battery backup

Spring storms knock out power exactly when you need the pump running.

  • Pump won't turn on

Float switch failure, motor burn-out, or breaker trip — diagnose same-visit.

  • Pump runs constantly

Stuck float, failing check valve, or high groundwater — all worth a same-day check.

Sump Pumps — Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a sump pump last?

Average lifespan is 7–10 years for primary pumps. Quality matters: a high-end Zoeller or Liberty pump can last 15 years; a $79 box-store pump often fails inside of 3. We size and select based on your actual water volume, not the cheapest option.

Do I really need battery backup?

If your basement is finished or stores anything valuable, yes. Spring thaw season + a windstorm power outage is exactly when sump pumps are needed most — and exactly when they can’t run without backup. The math: a battery backup costs less than a single insurance deductible after a basement flood.

How often should I test my sump pump?

At least twice a year — typically in fall before winter and in spring before snow melt. Pour a 5-gallon bucket of water into the pit and watch the pump run. Listen for noise, time the cycle, and confirm the discharge flows freely outside. We can do this as part of annual Care Club maintenance.

Why does my discharge line freeze?

Discharge lines run outside through cold winter air — and if water sits in a low spot, it freezes solid and blocks the pump. We re-route, re-grade, or add freeze-resistant fittings to fix it. A frozen discharge line is one of the most common causes of basement flooding in late winter.

Is the work warrantied?

Every install includes a 1-year Mainstream labor warranty plus the manufacturer warranty (typically 3–5 years on pumps). Care Club members get an extended 2-year labor warranty.
